Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal Cancer (CRC) is cancer of the colon or rectum. It constitutes the third most diagnosed cancer and represents 11% of all newly diagnosed tumors. Colorectal cancer survival depends mainly on the stage of the disease; in localized tumors, there is a 90% chance of a 5 year survival, whereas patients with distant metastases have less than a 10% chance of a 5 year survival. Treatment of patients with an advanced form of colorectal cancer is usually unsuccessful. Thus, the need for an accurate diagnostic tool to locate early stages of the disease would improve the survival rate of many colorectal cancer patients.
